About Know IT All

KIA for Parents

In 2005 Childnet produced the first Know IT All for Schools CD-ROM with funding from MSN UK. This material on this CD-ROM was targeted at young people (12-18) and was distributed to all secondary schools in the UK through the generous support of Microsoft.

Childnet consulted closely with young people and teachers in producing the resources and designed the content so it could be used either by a teacher in a whole class session or by pupils working on their own. The important safety information was presented in multi-media “modules” covering a wide range of issues from advice about handling cyber-bullying, to reliability of information and stranger danger.  The CD-ROM also had a section highlighting the ways in which children were using the internet to make a positive impact in society. A full Teachers Guide was produced for this CD-ROM.

The Schools programme included a volunteer programme called Getting to Know IT All in which volunteers from Microsoft and the police were recruited and trained to present the interactive elements to pupils in over 200 schools reaching an estimated 50,000 young people.

In 2006 the UK Government Department of Education and Skills (DfES) commissioned Childnet to build on the original Know IT All resource and produce a separate CD-ROM specifically for parents. This was to be distributed through its Computers for Pupils initiative to some 100,000 families who, over the next two years, will be receiving a computer as part of the Government’s Computers for Pupils initiative. Following universal positive feedback of Know IT All for Parents, the DfES commissioned Childnet to further update this resource in 2007 with new content for young people and translation into eight further languages including British Sign Language. In May 2007 1 million copies of the CD rom were duplicated and made available for schools in England to order free of charge in bulk quantities for their parents.

Within 6 months of the re-print all 1 million copies of the CD Roms had been distributed and although the content was available in its entirety on the website schools were still wanting to have hard copies to pass on to parents. Following an independent assessment of the success of the resource, Becta agreed to fund the updating of the resource (to include Welsh and BSL for young people as well as summary content on Cyberbullying, Social Networking and Where to Report). In September of 2008 a further 500,000 copies were duplicated and made available for schools to order free of charge.

With the success of the parents resources the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA), Becta and Microsoft approached Childnet to request whether a new Know It All resource could be produced for secondary school teachers as well as and those entering the teaching profession. Know IT ALL for Teachers (now called KIA for Secondary Schools) was launched in December 2007 and covered a wide range of E-safety issues, including the viewing of inappropriate content, plagiarism and bulling by mobile phones. Copies were sent to every teacher training institution across England and Wales, and with the support of the DCSF all secondary schools were able to order copies for their staff. The full content was also made available online.

Again with the success of the resources for secondary schools, the TDA, Becta and the new The UK Council for Child Internet Safety (UKCCIS) commissioned Childnet to produce a separate KIA resource for primary schools which as well as special KIA tutorials for school staff included a unique 3D teaching animation about E-safety suitable for very young children called 'The Adventures of Kara Winston and the SMART crew' with support from the DCSF this new KIA resource has been made available to all primary schools in the country.
